Ducktails
'Watercolors' (New Images/Belgium Import)
Out
of Belgium comes DUCKTAILS, a music project led by American singer/songwriter
and multi-instrumentalist Matt Mondanile. He started this band/project in 2006
and Watercolors is already the 7th DUCKTAILS record. The included music is
hypnagogic pop as described in the press, although I would rather describe it
as a mix of dream-pop, westcoast, AOR, lo-fi synthpop and soft 70s
erotic-soundtrack music. It's actually quite close to Donny Benet, Ed Motta and
a bit Young Gun Silver Fox. Combine these 3 and you'll have more or less the
sound of DUCKTAILS, although it needs to be said that the project has it's own
sound. It is very relaxing music and most of the 10 included tracks are in the
same direction. Deal with it for example resembles the perfect DUCKTAILS sound,
a midtempo almost AOR ish piece that makes you long back to the early 1980s
when L.A. westcoast troubadours like Christopher Cross, Robbie Dupree and
countless more were signed to major labels. The only difference is the
vocalwork of Matt, which is more akin to Dreampop actually. Anyway, Matt
definitely delivers a high quality record here with Watercolors and fans of
dreampop influenced 70s westcoast need to check out this album at: https://ducktails.bandcamp.com/album/watercolors

Steelwings
'Back' (Sliptrick Records/Sweden Import)
All
the way back in the early/mid 1980s Sweden produced quite a lot Hardrock and
Metalbands. Only a few survived, which is a pity, because there was a lot of
talent out there up north. STEELWINGS was formed in the early 1980s and I
remember it well when I heard their fantastic song Live your life on an Ebony
Records release I bought 30 years ago. It took a decade before I got the chance
to hear their only full length record from 1989, which was on a tape from a
Swedish tape trader somewhere in 1998. The band had split up for a number of
years by then, but fast forward to 2007, the band reunited for a one-off gig in
their hometown. Eventually this has led to a new full-length record entitled
Back. Musically it is a step back in time, because the included 80s Hardrock is
exactly like we heard it from bands like ACCEPT, AXXIX, V2, RESTLESS, TYRANT,
VICTORY and such in 1987. Nothing new is brought here, but in this world of
computer fabricated music that all sounds the same, it's nice to get back in
time and hear a band playing this Euro/German Heavy Metal/Teutonic Metal style
again. Complete with gang vocals and a shouter a la UDO Dirkschneider, fans of
this 80s Metal sound will absolutely love thie cliche tingled tunes like My
rock is hot, Rock my soul, Rock the nation and the sing-a-long party anthem All
night. If you're into any of the mentioned bands, then please check out this
new STEELWINGS album a.s.a.p. More info at: http://steelwings.se/

Chromatics
and Various acts 'Various albums' (Italians Do It Better/USA Import)
The
band CHROMATICS was formed almost 20 years ago in Portland, Oregon, USA. They
consist of Ruth Radelet (vocals, guitar, synthesizer), Adam Miller (guitar,
vocoder), Nat Walker (drums, synthesizer), and Johnny Jewel (producer,
multi-instrumentalist). Up until now they released 4 albums, with music that
started as punkrock, but this changed drastically when they released their 3rd
album Night drive on Italians Do It Better. This album from 2007 is now
considered a classic in the genre of electro/synthpop. There is loads of 80s
electro/synthpop influences to be heard (New Order, Human League), yet with the
dreampop touch of artists from the present day (Lapsley, Florence and The
Machine, Metric...) and quite some sci-fi soundtrack ish material a la Stranger
things/The Terminator/Blade Runner. The result is a lovely synth driven album
with lush female vocals and right from the very start until the end it takes
you on a journey into a different dimension, well, it feels like this. I want
your love and Tomorrow is so far away are fine examples how this sounds. It is
quite different than most other releases, but still captures an almost hypnotic
kinda sound that is also described as Italo Disco, yet this Chromatics is far
more dramatic and even a bit dark if you ask me. The band's 4th album Kill for
love was released in 2012 and starts with a very 80s sounding The Smiths ish
song Into the black, which is actually a Neil Young cover. The difference with
the previous album is that there are no drums and percussion to be heard,
making this a rather interesting record. Their 5th album Dear Tommy should be
out sometime in the very near future. However, besides these regular albums,
they are also producing soundtracks, of which also a bunch were sent to me. In
fact, their label Italians Do It Better sent me a total of 20-25 CDs they
released. The label is based in Portland and Los Angeles and was started by
Johnny Jewel and Mike Simonetti in 2006 to focus on Jewel's projects Glass
Candy and Chromatics and later Desire, Symmetry and Mirage. Johnny produces,
writes, and contributes to all of the acts on the label. So ebsdies the
Chromatics albums, we can also mention releases of Desire, Symmetry, Mirage,
Johnny Jewel himself and several unnamed soundtracks and compilations. Best way
to start here are the After dark compilation releases, which can contains songs
of all mentioned acts. The music is as mentioned mostly in the Chromatics 80s
influenced Synth Pop genre, with also influences from Italo Pop/Disco/New
Wave/Retrowave and sci-fi soundtracks. It's inmpossible to go through each and
every release, as it is so many and most of them go in a similar direction, so
if you like one, you will love them all. However, the Chromatics releases are
definitely the best recommended ones to check first, along with the After dark
compilations (which features some great songs by Professor Genius, Chromatics,
Farah and others). Also highly recommended are the DESIRE and GLASS CANDY
albums, which are basically new retrowave at it's very best, with a lush
keyboardfriendly sound and smooth female vocals. Check out all info on them and
all other releases on the Italians Do It Better label at: https://italiansdoitbetter.com/

Monkey
House 'Friday Vinyl Record release + CD' (Alma Records/Universal Music/InAkustik)
MONKEY
HOUSE already exists for almost 28 years, but their latest album Friday is my
first introduction to them and I must say that it couldn't be a better way to
learn about this incredible band. They are from Toronto, Canada and are
actually formed around Don Breithaupt, a pianist, singer/songwriter, composer,
arranger, producer and author. Together with drummer Mark Kelso, bassist Pat
Kilbride, and guitarist Justin Abedin, the line-up of MONKEY HOUSE is
completed. However, on each and every album of them, there are guest
appearances from legendary musicians such as Drew Zingg (Boz Scaggs), Elliott
Randall (Steely Dan), Michael Leonhart (Steely Dan), the legendary Jay Graydon
(Airplay, Little Feat’s Richie Hayward, David Blamires of the Pat Metheny Group,
Kevin Breit (Norah Jones), Mark Kelso (Gino Vannelli), Kim Mitchell (Max
Webster), Rik Emmett (Triumph), David Blamires (Pat Metheny Group), Lucy
Woodward (Snarky Puppy) and saxophonist Donny McCaslin, who played on David
Bowie’s final album. The new album Friday is their 5th studio album so far, and
it is released on both CD and VINYL, featuring in total 13 tracks. It was
produced by Peter Cardinali (Rick James, Teena Marie, the Brecker Brothers,
Sean Lennon, Marvin Gaye, Michael Bublé, Ray Charles - even the Temptations.
Phoebe Snow, Hugh Marsh, B.B. King, David Usher, Ian Thomas, the Dixie Chicks,
Shania Twain, Celine Dion) and Don himself. The result is a sensational pure
Westcoast/late 70s lite AOR record that is very close to STEELY DAN. Songs like
the amazing Welcome to the rest of the world, Say it for the last time
(co-written by Chris Smith (ex-Regatta), When the mud men come and Island off
the coast of America sound like newly made classics in the Westcoast/AOR genre.
If you're into STEELY DAN, TOTO, ED MOTTA, JAY GRAYDON, JAY GRUSKA, PLANET 3, YOUNG
GUN SILVER FOX and such, then you absolutely do not want to miss this instant
classic in this genre. The sound is fantastic, the songs are great, the vocals
are spot-on and instrumentally it is just perfection. This is retro late 1970s
at it's best, Yacht Rock to perfection, with a jazzy fusion pop sauce and a
little CHRISTOPHER CROSS pop overthrown in there as well. Also please listen to
the beautiful closing piano instrumental Echo park blues that sounds like a
classic jazz/classical music piece. Make sure not to miss this wonderful album!

When Young
'Reasons to dream Vinyl Record Release' (Virgin Music/EMI Records/UK Import)
The
band WHEN YOUNG comes out of Limerick in Ireland, but they are currently based
in London. Formed around Aoife Power (Vocals/Bass), Niall Burns (Guitar) and
Andrew Flood (Drums), the band offers fresh catchy Indie Melodic Poprocksound
on their debut album Reasons to dream, which was by the way sent to me on a
vinyl record. Although it might not sound that original, the band nevertheless
comes up with a nice package here that features a lot of really catchy fresh
summer friendly good time uptempo poprock, from the very start until the end,
with as highlights Pretty pure, The others, Future, In my dreams and Blank
walls. There is a huge 1980s indie wave influence to be heard here, which even
reminds me of A FLOCK OF SEAGULLS, THE SLOW READERS CLUB or ECHO AND THE
BUNNYMEN, but then with typical Irish accent vocals (THE CORRS, THE
CRANBERRIES, SINEAD O'CONNOR) and choruses that will be sung along for sure
during live gigs of WHEN YOUNG. It would be a real pity if this album will not
provide any hits, because it is radio-ready for sure and has all the
ingredients to deliver massive hitsingles. Check them out if you want to hear
typical modern day radio-friendly poprock at: https://www.whenyoungband.com

OnlySound
'The only sound CD / Derby Car Vinyl Record' (Independent/USA Import)
Out
of St Louis, Missouri, USA comes OnlySound, an all-original classic rock/bluesy
rock band with a sorta GUNS'N'ROSES meets HUMBLE PIE orientated sound. It's
sometimes sleazy like in the late 80s / very early 90s, with a very light
pre-grunge touch in the vocal department, especially when you listen to songs
like Derby car or Invisible man on their debut album Derby car, which they by
the way sent to me on vinyl! On the other hand, they go for a slower bluesy
rock approach during Bad dog or Bozo, which remind me of the afforementioned
HUMBLE PIE, NAZARETH or THE BLACK CROWES, so with a strong 70s rock identity. I
think they fit in right between those bands, but I have to say that they sound
at their best during the somewhat calmer bluesier material, where vocalist
Jewell Yocum sounds better. He is screaming a bit too much during the heavier
uptempo sleazier moments, while on a song like Bozo he sounds laid-back and
fits perfectly the 70s rock approach. Also during the LED ZEPPELIN ish Coming
home baby, it seems like we are listening to the latest sensation in heavy
blues rock and comparisons to RIVAL SONS are then even possible. If we have a
listen to Side-B of their vinyl debut Derby car, it starts with Janelle, a cool
uptempo hardrocker in the style of THE CULT and THE DOORS. Somehow it seems
that the band was growing while listening to their debut record, because the
songs and sound became stronger and stronger throughout the album and this
Janelle, with it's blistering guitar solo's is a deadringer for fans of pure
Classic Rock. Followed by Gold standard, a slower NAZARETH ish rocker with a
chorus that is close to GUNS'N'ROSES and classic AEROSMITH, another fine tune
that is memorable for sure. Sleight of hand is somewhat grungy/alternative, but
with Tuffy they step into somewhat heavier sleazy classic rock again. Closing
track Open lights is another highlight, a slow classic rock tune with biting
guitarsolo's. Concluded, a nice debut record, which sounded quite promising,
although the production was clearly not top-notch, but that is not a big issue
if you can consider this is an independent record.
The
follow-up to their vinyl record Derby car was released in 2019, simply titled titled
The only sound, only available on CD. This new album sounds much stronger and
also much more professional, thanks to a huge production. There are
improvements everywhere as well, which you can already hear when you hear the
opener Potshot, a strong uptempo classic hard rock tune that is close to
classic THE CULT and even FOO FIGHTERS comes to mind here. It seems like they
updated their sound, but thankfully still keep true to their bluesy rock
influences, because following track Peaches is a pure 1970s STATUS QUO ish
classic rocker with a catchy chorus a la BROWNSVILLE STATION's Smokin' in the
boys room. Singer Jewell Yocum sounds so much better this time around, as he
now knows where his strength lies in the vocal department. In total 12 tracks
are included and besides the first 2 songs, another highlight is the amazing
The only sound, a calmer Americana meets Bluesy rock kinda song, like JOHNNY
CASH meets PEARL JAM meets BLUE OYSTER CULT, with truly superb vocals of
Jewell. The last couple of songs on the CD are quite experimental actually,
which is a pity, because the first part of the album is sounding quite
sensational. Nevertheless, this is a band to watch out for in the future. You
can check out their music at: https://onlysound.bandcamp.com/

Danny Beardsley
'Blood from a stone' (Independent/GMI)
Out
of the UK comes the sensational guitarist/vocalist Danny Beardsley, who
delivers a superb debut album titled Blood from a stone. Musically speaking
this is high class bluesy melodic rock in the style of KENNY WAYNE SHEPHERD,
early WHITESNAKE, JOE BONAMASSA and a little Y&T, with vocals that remind
me a bit of ALTER BRIDGE's Myles Kennedy and TYKETTO's DANNY VAUGHN. You
absolutely cannot go wrong here, because all 10 tracks included here are
winners, but Behind enemy lines, Blind eyed decisions and the TYKETTO ish Never
too late are in the upper league of bluesy melodic rock, easily reaching the
level of mentioned acts. It's incredible that such a talent is not that known
yet, because Danny can sing very well like a young DAVID COVERDALE and play
guitar licks like a new guitar God and trust me, that doesn't happen too often.
And besides, the material is strong from start to finish, sounding memorable
and classic, but still up to date, close to the perfect mix between the
afforementioned bands, Also don't forget to check the AOR ish semi ballad Blood
from a stone, which is an instant classic! Must-have release for sure and
contender to reach the top 10 albums of 2019, so go check out Danny a.s.a.p. at

Drastic
Down 'EP CDR' (Independent/USA Import)
Here
we have a sorta classic groovy US hardrockband in the late 80s sleazy style of
EVERY MOTHER'S NIGHTMARE, TORA TORA, ROXY BLUE, SHOTGUN MESSIAH... Especially
when listening to great tracks like Hell is back and Riding high, this is
prime-time late 80s US Hair Metal with biting guitarwork and strong vocalwork. The
band is called Drastic Down and it's a pity only a CDR is available, because
mine is already skipping here and there, so for the future I am afraid I will
only be able to hear their music digitally. Anyway, the band comes out of
Seattle and truly delivers a great sound. 6 tracks are on this CDR and I must
say that this is a band to watch out for and hopefully a vinyl or silver
pressed CD will appear in the near future, because this band has got the sound
I miss nowadays a lot in the classic rock scene. Check them out at: www.drasticdown.com

Lovebites
'Awakening from abyss' (Dead Pulse Records/Sliptrick Records/Victor
Entertainment Japan)
In
case you missed the introduction of the all-female Japanese band LOVEBITES a
few years ago, we are proud to inform you about them now via this review. The
band released an EP and full-length debut CD titled Awakening from abyss back
in 2017. This is an album that simply blows you away in classic Japanese
melodic metal style, yet with an updated Euro Power Metal approach, thanks to
the mastering of the legendary Mika Jussila. If you remember MARI HAMADA,
LOUDNESS and SHOW YA, you will definitely love LOVEBITES, because they follow
the style of those legendary Japanese acts. The band is formed around Asami –
vocals, Midori – guitars, Mi-Ya – guitars and keyboards, Miho – bass and Haruna
– drums, and these girls can definitely play and handle their instruments.
Blistering soaring guitarsolo's, twin-guitarwork in the classic MAIDEN style
and typical Japanese vocals are making this a true winner in the Japanese
melodic metal history. The songs are most of the time quite fast, with as
highlights Scream for me, Shadowmaker (with it's lovely catchy choruses) and Burdenof
time. They have only been active since 2016, but already sound like they have
been here for ages, which of course is a good thing. LOVEBITES might as well be
the finest Japanese band this century and since 2017 they have built up quite a
reputation in Europe, thanks to sucessfull performances at the Metal Festivals
in the summer of 2019 (Donington, Graspop...) and meanwhile released a
follow-up album. I am convinced this band is going to become bigger and bigger
in the near future and if they are live as good as on record, well, who knows
we might be looking at one of the major acts in Metal in 5 years from now.

League Of
Lights 'In the in between' (Eight Space Records/UK Import)
It's
been 8 year since the UK based band LEAGUE OF LIGHTS released their same titled
debut, but it's all worth the wait, because the follow-up In the in between is
a fantastic record that sounds modern, but super melodic. It's melodic light progrock
or actually melodic (symphonic) poprock at it's very best, with a lot of
sensational songs included on this new CD. The band is formed around the lovely
vocalist Farrah West and keyboard player/producer Richard West (THRESHOLD),
with as guest players, guitarist Ruud Jolie (WITHIN TEMPTATION), drummer Mark
Zonder (FATES WARNING), bassist Jerry Meehan (ROBBIE WILLIAMS) and vocalist
Glynn Morgan (THRESHOLD). Together these professional well-seasoned musicians
have recorded a wonderful record that features 14 beautiful tracks which are
most of the time focused around crystal clear vocals and clean smooth melodies,
with a calm background. So don't expect big massive sounding bombastic
progmetal here, although the start of the album Shockwave is definitely a LANA
LANE/ERIC NORLANDER/KAYAK ish midtempo Progressive Melodic Rocker. However, as
mentioned before it is a more radiofriendly smooth affair which is almost pure
AOR/Melodic Rock based during wonderful songs like On a night like this,
Butterfly and Spectrometer which remind me of classic Dutch bands like THE
BOXX, VERALIN, JACKLYN, ANGELA AND THE RUDE (if anyone can actually remember
them!!!). Yes, it's polished and very melodic, but in a good way, as Farrah has
the perfect voice for this music and instrumentally the guys do their work just
brilliantly, especially Richard on the keyboards, who sometimes provide some
big 80s sounds here that touch the Synthwave barrier. Imagine a mix of LANA
LANE and KAYAK, then you're close to LEAGUE OF LIGHTS, but on the other hand,
they have an own identity which is quite clear on this lovely new record! Make
sure not to miss this release, go for more info to: https://leagueoflights.com

Rise
'Strangers' (Wise Queen Records/Nineteen 73/UK Import)
Not
that long ago we reviewed the debut album of UK (Sussex) based
singer/songwriter Talitha Rise, who now returns with a new album. She dropped
her surname, so it is now simply called RISE. The music is still the same and
for those who aren't familiar yet with Talitha, I can inform you that she is a
sensational singer/songwriter with songs that are very haunting, original,
baroque celtic folk based and soundinga bit like a mixture between KATE BUSH,
FLORENCE AND THE MACHINE, CLANNAD, TORI AMOS and such. Not a single weak song
can be heard among the 9 tracks that are included here. One of the guests is
FIELDS OF THE NEPHILIM guitarist Peter Yates. As mentioned in the previous
review, Talitha's vocals are really beautiful and a blessing to listen to, with
an own identity, but I can imagine fans of KATE BUSH and CLANNAD will
absolutely love this record. One of the absolute highlights is the lovely
Rabbit eyes, which is a haunting dark piano-ballad that just grabs you right
from the start. Make sure not to miss this album! More info at: http://www.talitharise.com

Yogi Lang
'A way out of here' (Gentle Art Of Music/Nineteen 73/UK Import)
2019
seems to be a very productive year for fans of RPWL, because earlier in the
year we had the fantastic new RPWL album Tales from outer space. And along with
a double live CD/DVD of RPWL, we can expect the new solo-album of RPWL singer
YOGI LANG, both released in November 2019. A way out of here is his first
solo-album since No decoder from 9 years ago. Without a doubt, it is a superb
album that is less proggy than RPWL and more song based, although still
touching the prog lengths here and there, such as opener Move on, which is a
fantastic tune that is reminding me a bit of JADIS actually. Yogi is a
fantastic singer and the music here is basically superb high quality
progfriendly singer/songwriter pop/rock (still very PINK FLOYDish) that could
easily bring him radio airplay. Besides the lovely opening cut, other
highlights are A way out of here, Love is all around and the superb closing
track I'll be there for you. No uptempo rockers here, as most of the songs are
slow to midtempo orientated, with still a rocking touch in the instrumentation.
Please don't overlook this brilliant album, as it is such a great listen! More

Stonefield
'Mystic stories' (BSC Music/H'Art/Gordeon/Germany Import)
In
the 1980s STONEFIELD was one of many, many young new bands trying to make it
big in the melodic heavy rock/metal scene in Europe, but unlike for example
AXXIS, they did not manage to breakthrough, although they did release 2 albums.
Now there is a CD available called Mystic stories which combines the best songs
of both albums. I already mentioned AXXIS, because the material of STONEFIELD
sounds almost identical to them, which is typical European 80s Melodic Heavy
Rock/Metal with high pitched German like vocals. Funny thing is that singer of
STONEFIELD (JUAN CARLOS ANEIROS) is actually coming out of Spain originally,
but the band itself was based in Switzerland. Like countless other bands that
started somewhere in those 80s hardrock/metal years, by the time it was 1991,
many had given up due to changing music climates and no success. STONEFIELD
also had a touch of progressive rock in their sound, thanks to the keyboardwork
and among the 8 included tracks we can hear some really nice material. To some
it might sound a bit dated and very 1980s, it surely will appeal to fans of the
aforementioned AXXIS or even ZENO. Check out more at:

Great Wide
Nothing 'The view from Olympus' (Independent/USA Import)
Out
of the Georgia, US state comes the progressive rockband GREAT WIDE NOTHING,a
3-piece band formed around Daniel Graham (bass, vocals), Dylan Porper
(keyboards), and Jeff Matthews (drums). They have a very 1970s orientated
sound, quite raw actually, with lead vocals that are quite direct in your face,
so it takes some time to get used to this. However, after a while the 70s
rawness has it's charm and along with the keyboards they add a typical European
Neo-Progrock touch (a la GALAHAD, PENDRAGON, IQ, EVERON). Overall they remind
me actually a lot of TWELFTH NIGHT, so I think by now you'll get the picture
that this is pure Progressive Rock. 4 songs are on the band's first album The
view from Olympus, of which the closing titletrack is the winning song, with a
length of 17 minutes. The band was formed in Atlanta in 2017, so they are quite
quick with the release of an album, but they are doing things quite
professional, although the production could be a bit better. Anyway, fans of
the mentioned bands will understand how it all sounds like and for more info on
them I would like to invite you go to: https://greatwidenothing.bandcamp.com/album/the-view-from-olympus

Cherie
Currie & Brie Darling 'Motivator' (Blue Elan Records/USA Import)
It's
more than 40 years ago that Cherie Currie was at the top of the hard rockin'
world as lead singer of the all-female rockband THE RUNAWAYS. She managed to
release a few albums (solo and with her sister Marie) in the years to follow,
but unlike the other members (LITA FORD, JOAN JETT, MICKI STEELE - THE
BANGLES), she more or less went on to do other things like acting, personall
fitness trainer and chainsaw carving! Anyway, the past few years she is
involved in the music business again, working with STEVE LUKATHER, SHAMELESS
and trying to re-connect with LITA FORD. However, this Motivator album is her
first official album release in almost 40 years (!), which is a real pity,
because she still sings extremely well and looks fabulous, so why she hasn't
continued to make music and tour is a big question. Anyway, it's never too
late, although this CD is mostly made up of covers of her favorite acts from
the 60s and 70s, such as T-REX, ROLLING STONES, THE KINKS, STEVE WONDER, etc. In
total 12 tracks are included, of which only 3 are originals sadly. On the other
hand the T-REX song The motivator and the catchy THE KINKS cover Do it again
are very strong rockers that are handled very well by CHERIE CURRIE and BRIE
DARLING. Brie is by the way a drummer/vocalist/songwriter, who together with
her husband DAVE DARLING (guitars) is helping out Cherie on this album. Brie
herself is also a female musician from the very long past, because she was the
original drummer of one of the first all-female rockbands of all times (FANNY),
dating back to 1969!!! Somehow these 2 girls found each other and recorded an
album together! Anyway, the 3 original songs are This is our time (a catchy
uptempo melodic poprocker a la KIM WILDE), Too bruised (calmer 70s ish semi
ballad) and I'm too good, that's just too bad (a strong 70s inspired
hardrocking tune a la THE RUNAWAYS meets T-REX/BTO). Hopefully next time more
originals, but on the other hand it's great to hear and see CHERIE CURRIE back
again where she belongs and fingers crossed for more new material soon.

Diamond Dogs
'Recall rock'n'roll and the magic soul Vinyl LP' (Wild Kingdom Records/Sound
Pollution/Sweden Import)
About
15 years ago we reviewed a couple of albums by the Swedish band DIAMOND DOGS.
However, they were actually already formed in 1992 and released a lot of
records before and after that until 2015, when they split up. Thankfully only a
few years later they reformed and the result is Recall rock'n'roll and the
magic soul. The first 2 songs on this glorious new album stand out big time as
being high class pure early uptempo sing-a-long 1970s retro rock and roll tunes
that sound like the perfect mix between MOTT THE HOOPLE, NEW YORK DOLLS, HANOI
ROCKS, QUIREBOYS, THE STOOGES, SMALL FACES and DAVID BOWIE circa Diamond dogs.
This is Rock and Roll the way it sounded in the 1970s, including a sorta
honkey-tonk ROLLING STONES ish rawness crossed with almost Glamrock ish
choruses like NEW YORK DOLLS meets T-REX meets THE SWEET style. If you're a fan
of any of these bands, then this new DIAMOND DOGS is an absolute must-have! The
band is clearly at their best during the uptempo rockers, with as other
highlights among the 13 included tracks, Heavy swing, Small town girl (SLADE
would be proud of this song!), Sugar dumpling and Keep movin' on. I'll bet live
on stage these guys will deliver a fantastic show, so let's hope we can catch
them live somewhere closeby in the near future. Meanwhile, check out their
lovely classic 1970s retro rock and roll record, which features a lot of catchy
sing-a-long radio-ready hits! If you would put this on and ask when it was
recorded, the answer would be 1971 or something around that period, but this is
brand-new fresh Swedish rock and roll at's best! I must not forget to mention
the late 1950s/early 1960s soulful R&B ballad Nothing can change this love
that unlike the rest sounds like SAM COOKE or STEVE PERRY, which is a huge
surprise for sure, but a really good one (smells like a next spin-off
band/act???). This album definitely sounds like a contender to make it into the
top 10 albums of 2019! Check them out at: https://www.facebook.com/everylittlecrack/

Warmrain
'Back above the clouds' (Independent/UK Import/Plastic Head)
I
am actually quite surprised to read the reviews of this release on the
internet, because they are not that positive, which is unbelievable, because
the British band WARMRAIN delivers a fantastic double-CD debut album titled
Back above the clouds. If you only just listen to the first couple of songs on
this 2-CD set, which are Fading star and Absent friends, this will wet the
apetite of any progrockfan out there! Sensational calmer PINK FLOYDish lenghty
melodic progressive pop/rock that includes all the elements at a very high level,
just perfect enough to highly recommended it to anyone who likes their prog go
into the classic PINK FLOYD, STEVEN WILSON, BLACKFIELD, ALAN PARSONS PROJECT...
direction. The vocals of singer Leon J Russell are very laid-back, crystal
clear and sounding very warm, which suits the music just perfectly. Only
complaint could be that the material stretches out quite a lot, up to 90
minutes and counting, with material that is also not the rockiest or uplifting
either. However, this is high quality progrock that needs to be heard by
everyone out there, as it is sounding really good. The album is divided into 2
stories, so you could call this an epic concept album, but while listening
there is definitely a split between the songs, in total 14 are included and as
bonus the band sent me their CD-single Here comes the rain again, which is a
peaceful cover of the EURYTHMICS song from the 1980s. Check it out for yourself

Hackers ' Empezar de
cero' (Rock CD Records/Spain Import)
I
followed the Spanish/Latin Rock/Metal/Hardrockscene for quite a while in the
past, but sometimes lost track, mostly due to the lack of time. However,
whenever I am on holiday over there, I am always keen to check out new and old
stuff in the local record shops. Recently I went to Valencia for example and
found some great new records of popular local rockbands singing Spanish sung
Rock. Thankfully when checking more new Spanish sung rockalbums that are ranked
high recently I discovered bny coincidence the band HACKERS from the beautiful
Isle of Las Palmas. These guys play pure AOR as if we're back in the mid/late
1980s and early 1990s. In the past we have seen quite a number of such releases
like TERCER ACTO, SANGRE AZUL, LAFASE, ALIADOS, etc. Now we can easily add
HACKERS, which could well be one of the greatest Spanish AOR releases of all
times! These guys are doing it very well on their debut album Empezar de cero.
The music balances somewhere between SURVIVOR, JOURNEY, FM, AVIATOR and such,
so the fans will then more or less understand we are heading into sensational
pure AOR and that is what HACKERS are doing, only then with Spanish lyrics,
which is no issue at all. 10 songs are included on the CD and all of them are
highlights, but Empezar de cero, La verdad de todas mis mentiras, the superb Mi
dulce condena (JOURNEY meets SURVIVOR back to 80s AOR school!) and A dos
centimetros de ti are the absolute winners here. Purest AOR in Spanish, that's
what you get here and all is done at an incredible high level! Please do not
miss this album, go for more info to: https://www.facebook.com/hackersrockband/

Moon
Letters 'Until they feel the sun' (Independent/USA Import)
Out
of the Grunge capital of Seattle comes the band MOON LETTERS, a band with a
pure 1970s progressive rocksound that shows clear influences from classic
GENESIS and KANSAS. They do have that typical American approach, which I
personally absolutely love as it goes for a little more accesible melodic
adventure instead of endless instrumental freaking. The flute and synths make
it sound truly 1970s ish, so you have your symphonic bombastic touch as well
and the guitarwork is really sensational. Vocally they keep things crystal
clear and super melodic, harmonic and memorable, almost like STYX (What is your
country), yet then less pompous and therefore perhaps the STARCASTLE meets
KANSAS description would suit best here. On the shoreline is prime time upper
level melodic progressive rock that will be loved by any progfan out there. The
already mentioned What is your country is actually a very special song settled
around lead- and harmonyvocals of the almost CSNY kind, yet with that exciting
80s prog background of let's say ALAN PARSONS PROJECT. Anyway, just like the
instrumental heavy progrock opener Skara brae, MOON LETTERS take different
steps in each and every song, as Beware the finman or The red knight for example
go for a more uptempo melodic rock/symphonic AOR approach like ASIA meets SAGA,
including lovely hooklines that brings back memories of ROBERT BERRY somehow.
It is clear when we approach halfway the CD, we are listening to something
exciting and memorable. An album that will be adored by the fans of progressive
AOR, Pomprock more perhaps than the pure progrockfans, although Sea battle is
definitely up the alley of any proggie and closing track Sunset of man mixes
the best of all (AOR/Prog and Pomp are melted perfectly over here). I am safe
to say that any dedicated music fan will understand that we have a highly
recommended album here that should not be missed! It's their debut album of a
band that consists of John Allday on keyboards, vocals and trumpet; Mike Murphy
on bass, vocals and trumpet; Kelly Mynes on drums and percussion; Michael Trew
on vocals and flute; and Dave Webb on guitars. Make sure to check out these 5
brilliant musicians at: https://www.moonletters.com

Tides From
Nebula 'From voodoo to Zen' (Mystic Production/Poland Import)
Out
of Warsaw, Poland comes the 3-piece instrumental band TIDES FROM NEBULA. They
were formed in 2008 and were up until their previous album a 4-piece band, but guitarist
Adam Waleszyński has left them. Remaining are Maciej Karbowski
(guitar, keyboards), Przemek Węglowski (bass) and Tomasz Stolowski (drums), whom
have meanwhile built up a reputation, releasing already 2 albums before this
new record From voodoo to Zen. The band's sound on this new album is sorta a
mix of classic Synthwave, Progressive Rock, Spacey 70s synthesizer music and
Orchestral Movie music, but they describe it themselves as "Catching the
sound of the universe". Anyway, it will attract to a lot of diverse
musicfans, because it is melodic and memorable along the lines, but still
attractive and adventureous enough for the music critics. This new album takes
you on a fantastic journey throughout 7 lengthy tunes. The overall sound/production
is high class and any fan of either Progrock or Synthwave will have to check
out this sensational release as soon as possible. Of course overall this
isntrumental journey will be described as Post-Rock, but personally I would
rather call it Progressive Rock with Synthwave influences. No matter what you
call this, any music fan need to check out this high quality release for sure.

Frank
Carducci 'The answer' (DVR/France Import)
Now
this is quite a surprise, because multi-instrumentalist/singer/songwriter FRANK
CARDUCCI from France is actually quite active and The answer is already his
third solo-album, but somehow his music didn't grab me that much. However, this
drastically changes when putting on his new album The answer, which starts with
a sensational pure 1970s inspired Symphonic/Pomprocker titled (Love is) the
answer that brings a big smile on my face as it recalls the days of ROADMASTER,
STARCASTLE, STYX and such. Perfectly done for sure and also Frank can easily
sing this kind of music, so therefore I need to give it a huge recommendation.
In total 10 tracks are included and it is clear this is 1970s inspired all the
way, because between a few very lengthy classic prog/pomp pieces (like the
aforementioned (Love is) the answer, Superstar and The after effect), the
uptempo melodic rockers such as Slave to rock'n' roll are basically going for a
pure BOSTON direction, including the harmonies in vocals and twin-guitars.
Frank has done something quite extraordinary here, because I have not heard
such sensational newly produced authentical 1970s Midwestern USA Melodic
Classic Rock/AOR/Prog/Pomp in a very long time, although we can also hear some
more RUSH ish progrock here and there. Frank sings and plays bass himself on
all tunes, but here and there actually did everything by himself, although he
is also helped by French musicians on a number of songs, while guest
appearances can also be heard by DEREK SHERINIAN (Alice Cooper, Dream Theater,
Billy Idol, Black Country Communion...), Jimmy Pallagrosi (Zio, Karnataka) and
Fabrice Dutour (Backroads, Dyslesia). It makes the album quite diverse,
although progrockfans will definitely like this a lot. The result is probably
his finest so far and something not to be missed! Anyone into BOSTON, LEGS
DIAMOND, ANGEL, ROADMASTER, HEAD EAST, STYX, STARCASTLE and such bands need to
check out this album a.s.a.p., but as mentioned Progfans will also like this a
lot, although then Prog the American way (ENCHANT, SPOCK'S BEARD, MAGELLAN...)

Flutatious
'Festival' (Magick Eye Records/UK Import)
Out
of London comes FLUTATIOUS, whom under the wings of the legendary JOHN MITCHELL
(ARENA, FROST, IT BITES, KINO...) released their debut album Festival. The band
consists of Andy Faulkner (Guitar), Michelle Devonshire (Flute, wind
synth, vocals), Stella Ferguson (Fiddle, vocals), Gerald Williams (Piano, Keys),
Bill Forwell (Bass guitar, banjo, vocals) and Malcolm Bailey (drums). Musically
speaking it is a sorta semi-instrumental journey that combines elements of
classic medieaval folk music with uptempo neo-progrock melodies. It sounds very
refreshing and still quite modern, but on the other hand clearly keeps true to
the traditional British Prog and Folk sounds. The result is a lovely album that
definitely combines the best of both worlds, with as highlights Acid rain, Joy,
Crystal morning and the fantastic uptempo melodic rocking closing track Tha I
ban. There is somehow an 80s kinda touch here and there, sorta like FLAIRCK
mixed with RENAISSANCE could be a nice description actually. Usually I am personally
not so keen on instrumental releases unless it is done as well as on this CD
and probably because it's actually semi-instrumental and here and there we can
hear some really nice vocal melodies. Check it out for yourself at: http://www.flutatious.co.uk

Gino and
the Goons 'Off the rails' (Big Neck Records/USA Import)
Formed
in 2007, the Tampa, Florida based band GINO AND THE GOONS deliver a great new
album that contains dirty mean classic rock and roll as if THE STONES were
young and energetic again. There's a strong Garage Rock/Punkrock attitude to be
heard here, very fuzzling mid1960s meets late 1970s rawness and I can inform
you that over here in Europe this kind of rock is absolutely adored. Anyway,
back to the band's info first, they consist of 3 members, Gino Bambino: Guitar
& Vocals, Someone Else: Bass and New Person: Drums. Actually this is Gino's
band, with 2 other 'changeable' musicians (The Goons). 10 uptempo rocking tunes
are included here and fans of NEW YORK DOLLS, ROLLING STONES, THE DAMNED, THE
STOOGES, GENERATION X, etc. will love this band for sure. Most of the songs go
in a same direction, simply back to basic punky rock and roll with singable
choruses. Live these guys will probably set the place on fire! For now, they do
it when putting on this CD as loud as possible! Recommended if you like your
rock to sound really mean and dirty as it you're watching them at the CBGB or
CAVERN CLUB! More info at: https://bigneckrecords1.bandcamp.com/album/gino-and-the-goons-off-the-rails-pre-order

Elaine
Samuels and Kindred Spirit Band 'Elemental' (Nineteen 73 Promotion/UK Import)
KINDRED
SPIRIT BAND is a British melodic prog/folkrockband in the tradition of
RENAISSANCE, MOSTLY AUTUMN, KARNATAKA, CHALLENGE, FLEETWOOD MAC... Fronted by
female singer Elaine Samuels, the band's line-up is completed by Elaine Samuels
- Lead vocals and guitar, Martin Ash - Violin and backing vocals, Catherine
Dimmock - Flute/Sax and backing vocals, Mike Hislop - Bass, Les
Binks - Drums and Chris Goode - Drums, percussion & keyboards. Together
they already gained some success after releasing their previous album Phoenix
rising, which is now followed up by Elemental. The album starts with the superb
catchy uptempo melodic prog/folkrocker No smoke without fire, with it's
beautiful harmonies that are really catchy and melodic. The album sometimes
drifts into excellent classic folk music a la FAIRPORT CONVENTION, so with a
big Celtic Rock kinda approach, like in Beyond the ninth wave. This makes it a
diverse record and very nice to listen to from start to finish, as it is all about
melodies here, folk, prog and melodic rock are perfectly blended together on
Elemental, with the amazing voice of Elaine, just listen to the super melodic
Understand (BANGLES meets FLEETWOOD MAC) or the celtic rocker Red red rose.
It's all present here and therefore highly recommended to check out! All info
on this band can be found at: http://www.kindredspiritband.co.uk

7Hy 'No
going back' (Lions Pride Music/Denmark Import)
Out
of the UK comes SEVEN HARD YEARS (a.k.a. 7HY), a band formed around ex-SHY
drummer Alan Kelly, who recruited ex-band mate Roy Davis (SHY Bassist), US
based singer Shawn Pelata (LINE OF FIRE), Dave Martin (Former Guitarist for
MARSHALL LAW), Martin Walls (AFTER HOURS) and Elliot Kelly (OCEAN CITY). Also
in the line-up we can find DANNY BEARDSLEY, a singer/guitarist, who just
recently released a lovely album titled Blood from a stone, reviewed elsewhere
on this page. All together an all-star line-up for a band (or project) formed
back in 2014. No going back is already their 4th album so far, which means they
are quite busy recording new material, kinda like LAST AUTUMN'S DREAM, who
released more than 15 (!) albums in the 2000/2010s so far or PHIL VINCENT and
also musically it is more or less in the same direction. 7HY was kind enough to
sent me all their 4 albums, so I could get a good view on their sound and see
if they developed themselves throughout these past 5 years. The band's melodic
rock is pretty consistent, so no big surprises and pretty much close to the big
AOR/Melodic Rock book written in the 1980s. Most of the original starting
line-up is kept in tact, with a few changes, including now the addition of
multi-instrumentalist and producer Andrew Chick (EDGE OF THE BLADE).The new
album No turning back offers some great typical 1980s inspired Melodic Rock and
while listening this sounds like a perfect cross between 80s BON JOVI and
JOURNEY, so actually you could say that this is a winner for any SHY fan out
there. Alan is clearly contributing to his former band's sound and offers
plenty of great newly written material. Deep Dark Blue for example is a song
that would have been huge 30 years ago as it breathes the same catchiness as
uptempo melodic rockers by BON JOVI, DANGER DANGER, TOBRUK, SHY and such. High
quality melodic rock for sure and of course not all of the 9 included songs are
reaching that level, but what makes this new album standout is the diversity in
tempo, because uptempo, midtempo and semi-ballads is nicely mixed here. Besides
Deep dark blue, another highlight is the fantastic Every moment, which is a very
catchy uptempo melodic rocker. Perhaps not as original and major label sounding
as the classic melodic rockbands, this is still a recommended album to check
out and in case you like it then you might consider checking out their 3
earlier records as well, because on those discs we can find some more great
melodic rocksongs as well (in total 36 more tunes!), such as Live without you,
Nothing hurts me like you and Strangers again. In case you miss the sound of
80s BON JOVI, then look no further, 7HY is a nice replacement! More info at: https://7hardyears.blogspot.com

Day Of The
Jackal '3 song EP CDR' (Independent/UK Import)
Out
of Leeds, UK comes the next Classic Rockband called DAY OF THE JACKAL. 3 tracks
are on their debut EP CD and with a lot of fun and energy, they bring us a
straight-forward dirty mean rock and roll sound that shows a lot of influences
from bands from the past. 70s AEROSMITH, GUNS'N'ROSES, ZZ TOP and AC/DC are
their main influences and you can clearly hear that here. Definitely a band to
watch out for in the near future. More info at: https://www.facebook.com/DayoftheJackalBand/

RWPL 'Live from outer space' (Gentle Art of Music/Nineteen 73 Promotion/UK Import)
2019
has been an incredible year for the German progressive rockband RPWL, because
they released a new album titled Tales from outer space, did a successful tour
and the band's singer YOGI LANG released a strong solo-record. Now there is the
double live-CD (and VINYL/DVD) that captured the band's live sound of their
recent tour. it was recorded at the famous de Boerderij in Zoetermeer, The
Netherlands and basically features their whole new album performed live along
with songs from their long past, dating back to 1997. The live gig in
Zoetermeer earlier this year was pretty much a perfect progrock concert, which
can be heard very clearly on this double-CD set.

Shunya
'Departure lounge' (Independent/Australia Import)
Discovered
via the Classic Rock prog magazine, we have a very interesting yet unknown
band/project called SHUNYA. He is a musician and producer located in the
Wollumbin Caldera, NSW Australia, playing most of the instruments himself
besides singing, writing, recording and mixing, with nevertheless a little help
of drummer Fraser Bell, who also plays some bass. Already a few albums on the
way, Departure lounge is SHUNYA's latest release. Musically speaking this is
progressive rock at it's very best, a bit laid-back and quite close to a PINK
FLOYD or RPWL, yet with an own identity and that is very important in the
overcrowded progressive music scene. 9 lengthy songs are included on the album
and especially Letter from the sky and Bountiful beautiful bliss are a pleasure
to listen to, but any song will do for fans of mentioned bands. This is prog
the way it should sound, really taking the time to focus on beautiful melodies
both instrumentally and vocally. Highly recommended to have a listen at: https://shunya1.bandcamp.com/album/departure-lounge

La Fase
'Various albums' (Rock CD Records/Spain Import)
Memories
of the past is what is bringing LA FASE for me personally, because this AOR
band from San Sebastian, Spain released one of the finest Spanish sung AOR
albums ever back in 1995. Now almost 25 years later the band is alive and well
again, sending me 2 of their albums, including the 2018 version of their
legendary debut. This seems to be a re-recorded new version of their classic
album, but there is not that much difference I think. I haven't played the tape
I owned of this album for almost 20 years now, so it is quite a welcome to hear
these AOR classics back in an updated version, Prime-time AOR/Radiorock of the
highest level is what you get hear, very close to early FM (Indiscreet), STAN
BUSH and ROXUS (Nightstreet) as well as other Spanish sung AOR acts like
ALIADOS, SANGRE AZUL, TERCER ACTO and such, with as already mentioned Spanish
lyrics. The vocals are strong, the catchy hooks memorable, the AOR choruses
easy to sing-a-long, also for non-Spanish speaking people and the guitarsolo's
soar, while the keyboards give it a real 80s AOR touch. I have no clue if they
were big in Spain back in the 1990s, but they could have easily been very
famous, because songs like the uptempo AOR pieces Siento soledad, Llorando
estas and Aire as well as the midtempo AOR classics Saldre a por ti, Alquien
and A tu lado should have been big radiohits. Besides the 95.18 CD, the band
also sent me a new album titled Enfasis, which was released in 2017. This album
basically continues the style of their debut, and despite it covers newly
written material, this is pure 80s AOR again. The guys are 20+ years older than
on their debut, but musically they still know how to write a catchy AOR tune,
because almost all 20 tracks are a pleasure to listen to. They bring us the
material in a way it looks so easy to do, but believe me, creating new classic
AOR is not easy nowadays, but thankfully LA FASE nails it big time here on this
2017 CD Enfasis with so many new catchy memorable tunes. Let's hope it will not
take another 20 years for a new album to arrive.
Between
this new LA FASE album from 2017 and their debut from 1995, the band more or
less split up, although all the bandmembers went on playing and recording as
EVERLEVEL, of whom also 2 CDs were sent to me. I guess you can say they changed
their name for a while to an English name and also both of their albums contain
English lyrics, so they were more aiming for the international market. I
believe now both bands are active, which is not that hard as the line-up is the
same. Anyway, EVERLEVEL is doing more or less the same as LA FASE, only with
English lyrics and here and there going for a more melodic hardrock/melodic
metal direction. I have to say that it sounds nice, but overall personally I
prefer them singing in their own language. This is the case with many Spanish
bands, because BARON ROJO, MURO, NU, MANZANO and countless others also tried,
but what makes them stand-out is the fact they are singing in Spanish.
Therefore I would also recommend LA FASE to continue singing in the Spanish
language with that catchy AOR sound they created on their 2 wonderful albums.

The Edge
Of Reason 'Sting' (STF Records/Germany Import)
Sting
is the 2nd album of the young German band THE EDGE OF REASON, whom are bringing
us a catchy somewhat 90s/00s orientated melodic gothic rocksound. What they are
doing is quite impressive and most of their songs are quite catchy, such as
opener A stranger you know, Through my eyes or Come true. The production is
very good as well and fans of THE RASMUS, HIM, LOVEX, THE 69 EYES and such will
definitely like this a lot. Perhaps not really original, the result is a nice
one to check out if you're a fan of mentioned bands. Here and there they also
sound like an Emo-rockband with a few screamo influences, but most of the
melodies make them sound like the aforementioned gothrockbands of the typical
00s European sound, although a catchy chorus like Through my eyes could even be
lifted from an 80s DURAN DURAN or PLATINUM BLONDE record, yet the heavy guitars
make it sound super modern. If you're starting to become interested, then go

R.X. Bertoldi
'Tracks in perspective' (Independent/USA Import)
From
the Seattle area comes singer/songwriter R.X. BERTOLDI, who sent me his latest
release Tracks in perspective, a wonderful album that combines the best of
Americana, Roots Rock and Westcoast. R.X. or Bob Bertoldi has a very strong
melodic voice, making the songs sound very melodic and a pleasure to listen to.
12 tracks are included on the CD and I have to say that it was quite nice to
listen to. He got help from guitarist Johnny Sangster, keyboardplayer Robert
Lee Mitchell, basists Keith Lowe and Aaron Harmonson and drummer Eric Eagle. Together
they created a very good melodic laid-back semi rocking album that could
perhaps best be compared to TOM PETTY when you start listening to opener Change
it all, a catchy uptempo melodic powerpop/roots rocker. There's some some
bluesy and singer/songwriter influences here and there, so it is quite a
diverse adventure and especially the warm voice of Bob is making this a
pleasure to listen to. One of those albums that deserves more attention for
sure, as the songs are all quite catchy and could easily be played on the
radio. Check it out for yourself at: https://store.cdbaby.com/cd/rxbertoldi22

Yuval Ron
'Somewhere in this universe, somebody hits a drum' (Wrong Notes/Nineteen 73 Promotion/UK Import)
Settled
in Berlin, Germany, guitarist/composer YUVAL RON releases a very impressive new
instrumental album that also features MATT PAULL (keys), ROBERT BADOGLIO (bass)
and drummer MARCO MINNEMANN (JORDAN RUDESS, STEVEN WILSON, JOE SATRIANI...). 6
long instrumental songs are included and musically speaking it is progressive
rock, yet with clearly influences from modern Jazz-Rock, Fusion, Metal and
modern music genres. Yuval has performed in some of the major Jazz and music
festivals and recorded several albums and live videos with his band. Besides, he
is a music instructor, professional composer, arranger, music producer and a
software engineer (!!!). This new album shows an incredible professional
musician doing his thing throughout 51 minutes of high level musicianship. Make

Piston
'Promo copy' (Independent/UK Import)
Rock
and roll seems to be alive and well, especially in the UK, where we have seen
countless new bands popping up and the latest one is called PISTON. They hail
from the Midlands and offer basically typical classic rock with influences from
AEROSMITH, FOO FIGHTERS, LA GUNS and so on. The band consists of the fantastic
singer Rob Angelico, guitarist Jack Edwards, guitarist Luke Allatt, bassist Stuart
Egan and drummer Brad Newlands. The result can be heard on their same titled
debut album, which was produced by DAN SWIFT (IGGY POP, DEPECHE MODE...) and
contains 10 blistering classic rock tunes that sound pretty much close to all
the bands we love so much and brought this genre to life in the past. Maybe not
that original, they are doing it really well and especially songs like
Rainmaker (RIVAL SONS meets LED ZEPPELIN), Carry me home (southern fried BLACK
CROWES meets FREE ish semi rock/ballad), Blow it away (a bit like TALISMAN
circa Humanimal!) and Leave if you dare are making this a very strong classic
rock record that will appeal to all fans of the genre for sure. Check them out

Jim Crean
'The London fog' (Independent/USA Import)
It
feels like we went back to 1985 when this kind of Hardrock was played everywhere
and labels released countless albums. JIM CREAN's new album The London fog is
dangerously close to the days of WARRIOR, KEEL, WASP, STEELER, HELIX,
BLACK'N'BLUE, DOKKEN and such. To some this kind of 80s Hair Metal/Hardrock
might sound dated, to others it is a blessing to hear something that sounds
like 30-35 years ago. Jim is a singer/songwriter from Houston, USA, who happens
to have a good network, because he managed to involve a lot of legendary
musicians on his latest album, including ex-W.A.S.P. guitarist Chris Holmes,
former WHITE LION frontman Mike Tramp, drummers Carmine Appice (Rod Stewart /
Ozzy Osbourne / Vanilla Fudge / Cactus / Pink Floyd / Blue Murder), Vinny
Appice (Black Sabbath / Dio / Heaven & Hell / Derringer / John Lennon),
Frank DiMino (Angel), Tony Franklin “The Fretless Monster” (The Firm / Blue
Murder / Whitesnake), Robby Lochner (Jack Russell’s Great White / Rob Halford’s
Fight), Rudy Sarzo (Quiet Riot / Ozzy Osbourne / Whitesnake / Blue Oyster Cult
/ Dio / The Guess Who), Rik Fox ( W.A.S.P / Steeler / Sin), Steph Honde (Paul
Dianno / Hollywood Monsters), Raymond Tabano (Aerosmith), Barend Courbois
(Blind Guardian / Zakk Wylde), Colleen Mastrocovo (Hair Nation), Ronnie Robson
(Hollywood Monsters / Dover), A.D. Zimmerr (Lou Gramm Band / Hair Nation), Eric
Lebailly ( Stu Hamm / Adagio), Chris Tristram (Jack Russell’s Great White /
House Of Lords / Joe Lynn Turner / Slash ), Christopher Konys (Tango Down),
Dave Pontrello (Session), Freddy Villano (Dee Snider’s Widowmaker / Quiet Riot
/ American Mafia), Artie Dillon (Appice / Carmine Appice Slamm), Carl Canedy
(The Rods / Manowar) and Mitch Perry (Talas / MSG / Cher / Lita Ford / Edgar
Winter / The Sweet). The result is a very nice adventure into the classic 80s
US melodic hardrock/heavy rockdays. 14 songs are included in total and
especially uptempo melodic rockers like Conflicted, Broken, Tears and 1981 are
a pleasure to listen to if you miss those 'hair' days. The musicianship is
incredible, of such a high level, but on the other hand with a guest list like
aforementioned, it is hard to deliver something average. Jim's vocals are
falling in the RATT/WHITE LION category, which means you need to get used to
his way of singing. Anyway, I was not convinced when looking at the inner sleeve
pictures of the CD booklet, because it looks a bit SPINAL TAP ish, but
musically speaking this is a highly recommended album to anyone who digs
classic 80s US Hardrock/Metal. Jim even included 2 classic 80s Power AOR ballads
called Let it go that (a la BON JOVI) and the CHEAP TRICK/ALICE COOPER ish Time
will let you know, while he goes for AOR all the way during Don't take your
love (sounding like BOB WHEELER). Anyway, check for more info his website at: http://www.jimcrean.net/

Faceless
Orphans 'Faceless Orphans' (AMG/Sony Music Canada)
Out
of Canada comes the band FACELESS ORPHANS and they were kind enough to sent me
their same titled debut CD. Not much info on them, but they hail from the
French part of Canada, Quebec and present us a nice first album that is
combining alternative rock and melodic rock. The material is somewhat groovy
and midtempo based, with strong guitarwork and melodic choruses, yet with an
updated modern approach (although slightly 1990s orientated). 10 songs are
included and especially Child wolf, Tears of glue and Swallowed hole (finest
song on the whole album!) offer very strong memorable melodies. The production
is not as huge as a major label release, so it really feels like an independent
release, which is definitely not a bad thing, because FACELESS ORPHANS is
therefore showing an own identity. This makes it hard to compare them actually,
but in case you want your music to rock, still sound melodic, yet a bit
alternative and melodic in-your-face, then look no further and check them out

Time
Jugglers 'Stories in time' (Independent/Bulgaria Import)
Not
so much info can be found on this band from Sofia, Bulgaria, but that makes
them even more interesting! The female fronted band is formed around Rosie
Lesidrenska - vocals, Pavel Daskalov - guitar, Dimo Zahariev - guitar, Phillip
Kolarov - bass and Alexandar Hristov - drums and
they were kind enough to sent me their rocking debut album titled Stories in
time. The album was just recently released and features 8 songs that capture
that typical independent sound, which is so much better than all the overproduced
major label releases. Opener Hot fire is a kick-ass uptempo classic melodic
hard rocker with superb guitarwork and strong vocals, a bit like THIN LIZZY,
COVEN, BLUE OYSTER CULT and such, with a definite early 80s kinda NWOBHM ish
sound. Next track Urban packet is more midtempo based, quite heavy and groovy
actually, with big almost Stoner Rock meets Doom Metal kinda guitar riffs,
combined with bluesy vocals like BLUES PILLS meets BETH HART. The band then
changes the sound once again and this time it is pure high class melodic rock during
the sensational uptempo Drown together, with it's lovely hooks and catchy
chorus, a deadringer for fans of classic VIXEN and ENVY. Back to heavier Metal
ish material on the following track Deadlock, which has a sorta 1990s approach,
a bit like DORO actually. The umpo instrumental Groundbreak goes back to big
1970s Stoner/Doom/Classic Rock mixtures, with once again the sensational
guitarwork of Pavel. Hopeful song is pure classic Hardrock and reminds me a bit
of LITA FORD and GIRLSCHOOL. Mind license is again the mixture of classic 70s
Hardrock/Stoner and Doom like BLUES PILLS meets BLACK SABBATH and closing track
The gargoyle is the most interesting track here as this midtempo piece offers
some beautiful haunting melodies (and the best vocals of the album), while the
whole epic kinda built-up to the chorus and guitarsolo is quite memorable,
especially after a calmer start. This is definitely worth tracking down, as we
hear something very good and promising for the near future. Check out this
Bulgarian band a.s.a.p., especially if classic female fronted hardrock is your
favorite genre. More info at: https://timejugglers.bandcamp.com/releases

IQ
'Resistance' (Giant Electric Pea/UK Import)
The
legendary Neo-Progressive Rockband IQ was formed in 1981 and they played an
important role in the new progrocksound to emerge from the British Islands
during the 1980s and beyond. I have seen them live in the early 2000s and they
delivered big time. Also their studio-albums features brilliant high quality
music that stood the test of time. Now in 2019 they return with one of their
finest records ever, the double-CD Resistance. Although some line-up changes
here and there, as one of the founding members, Martin Orford (keys) is no
longer on board and has been replaced by Neil Durant already back in 2007,
while long-time member John Jowitt (bass) left the band also quite some years
ago, the other 4 members are all from the band's first line-up from the 1980s,
so we have Mike Holmes (guitars), Tim Esau (bass), Peter Nicholls (vocals) and Paul
Cook (drums). This makes them quite exceptional in the rock scene and when
listening to their new album, it sounds all very fresh and quite sensational if
you ask me. The band's original neo-progrocksound is more balanced, a little
heavier and slightly more modern than before, sometimes close to melodic
progressive metal actually, like THRESHOLD if we need to mention a comparison.
11 lengthy songs are spread on 2 full-length discs and it is a dream for anyone
into progrock, because this is truly a wonderful masterpiece that has got all
it takes to become a classic in the genre. It's not an easy album, as it is
quite dark and a little complex, but throughout the album you will discover
many beautiful melodies, both vocally and instrumentally. Songs like A missile,
Rise, Stay down and Alampandria are pure progrock or even close to melodic
progmetal heaven, but the band also takes time to slow things down and go for a
more PINK FLOYD ish direction, such as during the 70s prog epic Shallow bay,
one of the finest IQ songs ever recorded, with a truly sensational guitar solo,
but also If anything, which has a ballad ish approach. CD1 and CD2 do not
differ much from each other musically speaking, although perhaps the songs are
even a bit longer, with as absolute highlight the amazing progrock masterpiece
Perfect daze. All together, this is quite an essential progrock journey you need
to experience if you call yourself a fan of the genre! More info on IQ at: https://www.iq-hq.co.uk/

The LRW
Project 'To love, repeat & wonder?' (LRW Music/UK Import)
Finally
a great new AOR project that is not under the FRONTIERS RECORDS flag, because
LRW PROJECT is independent and the music is pure AOR, late 80s/early 90s style,
reminding me a lot of MARK FREE, SIGNAL, ALIAS, STREET TALK, PASSION STREET and
such. The CD has an own approach, so secretly doing AOR the way it should sound
and not being screwed by the AOR labels on the production field. This means strong
catchy hooks, wonderful lead vocals, a light yet semi-rocking approach and some
killer choruses that will wet the apetite of AOR fans all across the world. 10
songs are included on the CD and before going into further detail, it is of
course interesting to learn more about THE LRW PROJECT. This project is formed
around York based singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Leon Robert
Winteringham, who is doing almost everything on his own. Without a doubt, this
release should absolutely NOT BE MISSED, because it is the closest thing you
can get to that lovely late 80s classic lightweight AOR sound you will ever get
nowadays!
Opener
Day by day and also most of the following tracks (Voices of reason, Hard to
find, Individual, Love again and the SUPERB Hell & back) are all pure classic
midtempo AOR pieces that sound like a cross between ALIAS, MARK FREE and
STARSHIP circa the 1980s. In case you were wondering if this kind of pure AOR
still exists, then look no further, because THE LRW PROJECT delivers big time.
The sax solo during Voices of reason also gives it a BOULEVARD (Canada) touch,
so we're only a few tracks away and any AOR fan will now feel his/her heartbeat
going up to a max. The funny thing is that the sax solo was done by Mark Holden
(of BOULEVARD), but I only found out after checking the liner notes, so I guess
you can say I could already guessed it in advance.
Anyway,
a big smile on my face and I am pleasantly surprised to finally hear after all
these years a real new pure AOR gem that has not yet been discovered yet. In
fact, forget all those AOR label releases and go for THE LRW PROJECT, because
this CD simply blows away all the AOR releases of the past years and reminds me
of the last time I could say this (the legendary album of RONNY LEE). Time will
tell if this album will be up there with the best AOR releases of this century,
which so far includes RONNY LEE, PINNACLE POINT, PHILIP BARDOWELL, PRIDE OF
LIONS, NIGHT FLIGHT ORCHESTRA and PETERIK/SCHERER. This is a dream for fans of
MARK FREE, ALIAS, SIGNAL, JOHN WAITE, DAVID KUHN, VINNIE KAY, ZAPPACOSTA, 80s
STARSHIP, 80s BRYAN ADAMS (his biggest influence!) and so on. I think it's
personally much better than the recent new BOULEVARD release, because all
included songs on the LRW PROJECT CD are strong catchy AOR tunes that could
turn this album into a real AOR classic in the near future.
The
only remarks I could make is to include a few real uptempo rockers next time,
so there's a bit more diversity. Add a few more guitarsolo's and perhaps Leon
Robert is able to belt out a few more higher pitched vocals like he does during
the chorus of Hell & back, because he now sings most of the time in a
similar tone (like DARREN WHARTON and GARY HUGHES). Nevertheless, every AOR fan
should check this out a.s.a.p. at: https://www.facebook.com/thelrwproject/

4th
Labyrinth 'Better' (4th Labyrinth Music/WDFD Records/UK Import)
Now
this is classic rock at it's very best when listening to the incredible catchy
opener This is rock'n'roll, a superb uptempo melodic classic rock tune that reminds
me instantly of the classic THIN LIZZY/NWOBHM days. This is one of those songs
you will be singing along during live gigs and afterwards it will stick in your
head for days or even weeks. Also the following track Better goes in that
direction, singing along and uptempo classic British Melodic Rock in the style
of THIN LIZZY, MAGNUM, SHY, PRAYING MANTIS, LIONHEART, AIRRACE and so on.
Thankfully it still exists and in this case it is a band called 4TH LABYRINTH. They
hail from Cambridge, UK and were formed around 2015, already releasing an album
before Better back in 2016 and now following it up with a sensational new
record titled Better. They are surely bringing back the classic guitarsound and
crystal clear melodies from the late 1970s and early 80s sound, which is
absolutely fantastic to hear. Sometimes they capture that HIGH ROLLER RECORDS
sound, if you know what I mean, but they also remind me overall a lot of CONEY
HATCH and the band's vocals are even dangously close to CARL DIXON. Anyway, 4th
LABYRINTH consists of Marcel Kunkel - Vocals/keys, Andrew Cross - Guitar, Claudia
McKenzie - Bass and Tom Winch - Drums. In the same uptempo catchy melodic
hardstyle as the earlier mentioned songs is also the superb catchy Keep me from
falling. A different tempo can be heard during Darkness calling, which is
bringing us back into classic 1970s epic hardrock a la URIAH HEEP and DAMASCUS,
and the epic semi ballad Your symphony that even reveals some slight KANSAS and
TOUCH (!) AOR/Pomprock influences and features a beautiful guitarsolo. RAINBOW
influences are all over the place when listening to the groovy I'm a hunter
that is basically a dream for anyone into classic 70s Hardrock. The final 2
songs are the uptempo melodic rocker This feeling (a la CONEY HATCH/HARLEQUIN/PRISM/CHAIN
REACTION/LOST WEEKEND) and Make it mine (a 7 minutes counting epic TEN ish
melodic rocker with some progrock influences). I am so excited about this band
and it seems like 2019 is bringing so much joy again with sensational new
albums and 4th LABYRINTH is one of them! Check them out at: http://4lab.co.uk/

Stone
Rising 'Stone Rising' (Independent/Australia Import)
Out
of the Gold Coast from Australia comes the classic rock/hardrockband STONE
RISING. Formed back in 2009, they have built up quite a reputation meanwhile
and in 2019 their official debut CD was released. It features 10 songs, which
were written over a past decade and musically speaking we are heading into classic
Australian Hard rock and roll in the style of AC/DC, ROSE TATTOO, KINGS OF THE
SUN, THE ANGELS and you can also hear a lot of THE CULT similarities. The
band's line-up consists of Greasy Belcher on lead vocals, Rowie Riot on Guitar,
Roxxon on Bass and Dave Cram on Drums. Most of the 10 songs are
straight-in-your-face dirty mean classic hardrock and roll in the style of
mentioned bands, so if you like one, you will love them all, but personally the
best one is the uptempo Already gone. The closing track Long hard road is one
of the few slower tunes with Greasy singing in a clear BILLY IDOL/IAN
ASTBURY/JIM MORRISON kinda tone. This semi epic ballad/rocker of 8 minutes in
length is one of the absolute highlights here, because Greasy shows here that
he is able to easily sing in this somewhat low key and the song itself is also a
must-hear if you would like to hear a perfect cross between BILLY IDOL, THE
CULT, BADLANDS and THE DOORS. It surprises me that this band is not praised yet
as the next big classic rockband, because they are definitely as good as other
new acts like WOLFMOTHER, RIVAL SONS, THE ANSWER and such. Check them out for

Stef Chura
'Midnight' (Saddle Creek/USA Import)
Out
of Detroit comes the singer/songwriter STEF CHURA, whom I discovered at the
LEFT OF THE DIAL festival in Rotterdam in October 2019. She was kind enough to
hand over her 2nd album Midnight, which was released on SADDLE CREEK RECORDS.
Her performance over there was a little more polished and vocal friendly than
on this record, but for me personally I find Midnight more interesting, as this
album shows a poetric and a very aggressive alternative indie post-punker bringing
mostly rocking tunes such as Scream and Method man. PATTI SMITH is definitely
the closest possible comparison, although STEF CHURA is going more over the
edge both vocally and instrumentally. Sometimes it is memories of the 1990s
when female artists started to go the alternative rock direction instead of
doing what producers are telling them to do. For example during the wonderful
90s orientated dark slowtempo Sincerely yours (a la CRANBERRIES/L7) or the
uptempo rockers 3D Girl (great guitarsolo) and They'll never she reminds us of
the days of PJ HARVEY and ALANIS MORRISETTE. Producer of Midnight is Will
Toledo of the band CAR SEAT HEADREST, who also contributes bass, guitar, organ,
and synths, while singing a duet with Stef on the melodic altrocker Sweet Sweet
Midnight. Closing track is a surprising cover of the BILLY IDOL classic Eyes
without a face. All together, this is a very nice strong female alternative
rocking album that is recommended to fans of PATTI SMITH, ALANIS MORRISETTE and
STEF CHURA herself, because meanwhile she has now developed her own sound that
rocks, sounds underground, raw and still here and there catchy, without ever
being commercial. Check it out for yourself at: http://stefchura.com/

Jacks Full
'...whatever' (Independent/Greek Import)
We
don't see many Greek bands appearing on the regular music webzines, so once
there is a band with an official album release, it is interesting to see if
they have actually something to offer. Thankfully the band JACKS FULL from
Athens are definitely a big recommendation to check out, because they deliver
high quality classic hardrock/metal on their 2nd CD ...whatever. They were
formed in 2014 by 3 friends, who already knew each other for over 10 years, Nick
Spathas (guitar), Michael Apartoglou (vocals-bass) and Vaggelis Kardamitsis
(drums). I have not heard their self titled debut album, but when listening to
the new record it is clear that we are dealing here with a very strong band
that can easily compete with the big boys out there. 9 songs are included and
especially during the beginning of the album, the groovy late 80s Poser Melodic
Hardrock/Hair Metal reminds me a lot of classic SKID ROW (circa debut/Slave to
the grind). Especially when you listen to a song like Freedom has a price you
can hear how good these guys are, because this is like an updated version of
classic SKID ROW. Michael has a great voice and the overall vibe of the band is
totally American late 80s/early 90s, yet it still does not sound dated all. The
groovy rhythm sound makes it sound fresh and modern, just check out for example
Bad karma. There's also some similarities to bands like TESLA, EVERY MOTHER'S
NIGHTMARE, LILLIAN AXE, GUNS'N'ROSES and such, so I guess by now you will more
or less understand how this band sounds. Special attention for the superb
melodic rocker Blue that sounds like a perfect mix between TYKETTO, TALISMAN
and HAREM SCAREM, with some lovely melodies and a great guitarsolo, it is
probably the finest tune on the album! There's also enough diversity going on
here as mentioned, because for example a song like My own kind is almost mid
1990s alt/grunge with a big bluesy/doom guitar riff, like something that could
have been done by ALICE IN CHAINS actually, and halfway the tempo of the song
changes into an almost BLACK SABBATH/MYSTIC PROPHECY ish Melodic Metal
direction! Or how about the epic uptempo meldic metal monster Shot in the back
with it's catchy chorus, another deadringer for fans of NOCTURNAL RITES, DREAM
EVIL and such, yet with a darker sound vocally. Back to classic rock a la
GUNS'N'ROSES and NAZARETH on a song like Without you and along with the slow
midtempo heaviness of Whatever (that also halfway changes to pure classic US
Melodic Metal a la LIZZY BORDEN) and closing track Waiting..., the band
continues until the end with so much diversity that it is all over in a minute.
After a few spins, the band reminds me in general so much of the mid 1990s band
TEER on their independent debut release, but I am afraid nobody in the audience
will remember that Florida based band! It is a compliment for JACKS FULL from
Athens, Greece, because what they are doing here is of a very high level. Conclusion
is simple, as with JACKS FULL we have a great new rocking band that clearly has
a bright future ahead of them, bringing together all kinds of rock and metal! Do
not miss this sensational band at: https://www.jacksfull.com

Angelie Marie
Project 'In the shadows' (Independent/USA Import)
In
the shadows is the 4th album of ANGELIE MARIE PROJECT, a band from Idaho, USA
formed around singer/songwriter ANGELIE MARIE. Angelie has been active for many
years now in the music business and along with bandmates Kat Hall - bass,
flute, back-up vocals/harmony,
Christopher Kohut - drums and Gregory "Doc" Loewen - keyboards, she
is now recording songs as a full band. The included music on this new album is 1970s
inspired radio-friendly uptempo pop/rock a la FLEETWOOD MAC/STEVIE NICKS,
especially during the first 2 songs Fifthy autumns and Sing, sing, sing, both
quite catchy and memorable. The songs are very melodic and catchy actually and
although perhaps not fully rock, the combination of acoustic and electric parts
is making it sound very pleasant and original actually. The midtempo Muddy paws
has a sensational chorus that you will be singing along quite easily and
overall this melodic pop/rock tune even reminds me a bit of 70s HEART! There's
also some jazz groove in a few songs like in Yeah, yeah and it took quite some
time to figure out Angela reminds me vocally a lot of CHIRSSIE HYNDE,
especially during the THE PRETENDERS ish Not going to bail. I guess fans of
female fronted pop/rock the old fashioned way will definitely like this a lot!
